Former Seafarer, Now a Freelancer
Seafaring is a profession that I grew up into. Since I was a kid, all I ever think about what I want to do when I grow up has always been to become a seafarer. Seeing how my father supported our family, financially, made me want to be like him. When I became a seafarer myself, that's when the rude-awakening happened. Yes, I was able to financially support my family like my father. Yes, I was able to give them what they need and want like my father. But then I realized, I don't want to be away from them most of their lives. I don't want to miss most, if not all, of their milestones. I want to be there with my wife facing and solving problems together and not leaving her all on her own.
I was onboard a ship when the pandemic started and the fact that my family and I were facing the uncertain times away from each other got me really scared. A lot of thoughts crossed my mind. What if I were infected and never got to see them again? What if they were infected and I wasn't even there by their side? What if we never got to spend our last days together? That's when I decided to make this huge change in my career and ventured to freelancing.

I enrolled in a Freelancing Course offered by the FVA Business Consultancy and did the course while I was in quarantine following my repatriation. I was in a lot of pressure because everything was new to me but my motivation and determination was greater. I always tell myself that I will make this work no matter what because at the end of the day, it's going to be this or leaving my family again. So, I was able to finish the course and it made me the freelancer that I am today.
